太い茎に甘みがあり、葉や蕾もクセがなく美味しい菜花です。江戸時代にインドネシアのジャワ島から伝わったとされ、他のアブラナ科野菜と染色体数も異なり、交雑しない、貴重な品種です。東京都西部から埼玉県飯能市周辺で古くから栽培されてきた伝統野菜。ゴマ和え、おひたし、味噌汁の実、また、炒めても。
